Is College Even Necessary Anymore?

There has been some debate recently over the usefulness of getting a college education.  While some fields do need higher learning, others (and the ones that most of the college-educated population enter) don’t.  Many are finding that their degrees do little more than just act as very expensive dust collectors.

There are a growing number of economists arguing that not everyone should go to college and waste the money, especially when so many people don’t even use their degrees in a career.  The more conservative advice people instead to think about going into trades that are in demand such as construction, electrical work and others that don’t require a full degree.  Many great careers can be had without a full degree.  They are much less expensive than a full degree and usually take much less time to complete.

Many are finding that the careers don’t pay the bills, due to either the economy itself or a surprisingly lower earnings than they had thought they would receive.  While yes, college will add a lot onto lifetime earnings many are still questioning if it is worth it in the end.

The economists point to the wasted money that never will get put to use, and instead will just be a hard to pay off and expensive ‘learning experience’ for those student loans many are having trouble paying.  It seems many are only taking courses for that degree anymore due to the thinking it adds value to a person, if not a resume. Yet, is that way of thinking going out the window now?  Many are finding that they are drowning in debt, and cannot afford to pay their student loans, which can lead to a lot more trouble.

Waiting to find the correct career for you may be a viable option, as opposed to jumping around in one that you don’t enjoy.  There is no ‘cut-off’ date after all to attend, and if you are more sure about a chosen path there is more of a chance for success in the end.
